The Descent DLC Pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 has been released on the PC version of the game this week (11th August Descent Pack was Released). This is the third DLC Pack out of four for the Black Ops 3 game. However, it seems that Activision has changed the way that they are distributing/releasing the DLC content for the PC Players (Steam).
As of now, PC Players cannot buy any of the DLC Packs for Black Ops 3 individually. This means that any player on the PC version of Black Ops 3 has to buy the season pass to get access to the Descent DLC Pack. On top of this, the previous 2 DLC Packs that have been released have been removed from the Steam Store. This means that to get any of the DLC Packs you now have to pay the £34.99 for the Season Pass instead of previously being able to purchase whichever DLC Pack(s) you wanted for £10-£15 each.
Activision has confirmed that the change in the DLC Pack distribution on PC (Steam) in an article on their support website. At the bottom of the article is says:
"Individual DLC map packs can no longer be purchased separately on PC. You must purchase Season Pass in order to obtain DLC map packs. If you have previously purchased DLC 1 and/or DLC 2 separately, you will have the option to purchase Season Pass at a discounted rate. This discount is redeemable via Steam coupon and will only be visible while you are logged into your Steam account and have added the Season Pass to your cart."
Something to note is that if you have already purchased either or both of the two previous DLC Packs then you will get a discounted price for the season pass meaning you can save some money.
Treyarch's PC Dev, who is the head of the PC part of Treyarch's development team, said on twitter that he is looking into the change in DLC Pack distribution, but, he has no control over how Activision choose to distribute their products. Furthermore, he said that he is looking into a way to resolve this issue with Activision.
PC players: I see your questions regarding how DLC is offered on Steam today. I'm talking with the folks that handle that - stay tuned.— pcdev (@pcdev) August 11, 2016
@FenYoutube Sorry, I don't have any control over how our products are sold or distributed but I'm pressing for a resolution.— pcdev (@pcdev) August 12, 2016
At this time it is unclear why Activision made this change because the players on the console version of Black Ops 3 can still buy the DLC Packs separately. In addition, a possible reason for this is due to the low player count on the game on PC (Steam) maybe Activision could stand to make more money if players have to get all the DLC Packs at once instead of only buying the ones that look good to them. Furthermore, another reason could be again because of the low player count, but, it could help people to find matches because all the players that have any of the DLC maps will have all of the DLC maps which could help the matchmaking for the PC version of Black Ops 3. Also, a question is that if this stays how it is will we see the same distribution model for PC Players on Infinite Warfare?
